The cities of Cyrenaica have their roots in the 7th century BC, when the Dorians arrived from Greece and founded the Cyrenaican Pentapolis. These splendid Greek cities, which later came under the control of the Ptolemaic pharaohs and finally Rome, preserve beautiful ruins, but the jewel in the crown is Cyrene, the Athens of North Africa, which recalls a glorious past that is sure to thrill anyone who walks its ancient streets.
