Self-proclaimed independent from Somalia more than twenty years ago, but not yet recognised by the international community, Somaliland is one of the least visited countries on the African continent, despite boasting historical and naturalistic treasures of absolute importance and interest. This is a short itinerary, but full of suggestions, which will give you unforgettable emotions.

Among Somaliland’s beauties, the site of Las Geel certainly has a place of honour. This is a complex of caves with splendid polychrome rock paintings dating back to the Neolithic period and perfectly preserved. A sacred place, said to be inhabited by spirits, to this day the sole and effective guardians of this precious treasure trove of pastoral images and stylised human and animal figures in unique iconographies. Equally evocative are the decadent Ottoman town of Berbera, an ancient crossroads of trade between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, as well as the busy and lively camel market of Hargeisa, one of the largest in the Horn of Africa.
