Libya preserves a varied and beautiful historical and archaeological heritage in what were once the northern provinces of the Roman Empire, Cyrenaica and Tripolitania. Largely occupied by desert crossed by ancient trans-Saharan routes, Libya still harbours caravan cities that were once its most important trading hubs, such as the marvellous Ghadames.
An itinerary that spans time and space in an extraordinary country with splendid archaeological vestiges, from Leptis Magna, the largest Roman settlement in Africa, to Sabrata with a magnificent theatre from the Severan era, to the Greek polis of Cyrene, Apollonia and Ptolemais that challenge the sites in Greece for vastness and beauty. Leaving behind the Greco-Roman vestiges, in the heart of the Sahara the traveller cannot fail to be impressed by the ancient city of Ghadames, an obligatory stop for trade along the caravan routes, immersed in an atmosphere out of time.
