In one of the largest countries in Africa, with most of its territory occupied by the Sahara, Libya, in the area facing the deep blue Mediterranean Sea, holds wonderful and ancient cities in its provinces of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica that surprise the traveller who decides to embark on a journey to this extraordinary land.
While Leptis Magna and Sabrata recall the Roman heritage of the Tripolitanian province and with their magnificent buildings and monuments have defied time and the advancing desert, the cities of Cyrenaica have their roots in the 7th century B.C. when the Dorians arrived from Greece and founded the Cyrenaica Pentapolis. The splendid Greek cities, which later passed under the control of the Ptolemaic pharaohs and finally Rome, preserve beautiful vestiges, but the pearl is Cyrene, the Athens of North Africa, which recalls a glorious past that certainly thrills those who walk its millenary streets.
