An immense expanse of golden sands and monumental dunes covers the Saharan region south-west of Libya. It is the heart of the ancient land of the Garamanti peoples, which continues further south into south-western Fezzan, home of the Tuareg clans. Here, true works of art of nature suddenly appear: the astonishing salt lakes of Ubari, lapped further south by the wind-carved dunes of Murzuq and to the south-west by the bizarre sandstone formations of the Jebel Acacus frontier region, which in turn guard the only man-made work of art, the most conspicuous heritage of rock paintings and engravings in the Sahara.

In addition, on this special departure accompanied by Leonardo Francesco Paoluzzi, we will visit the Greek polis of Cyrene, Apollonia and Ptolemais, which challenge the sites in Greece for their vastness and beauty.

The pyramids of Al-Hattia, evidence of the Garamantian Empire.

Day 3: Tuesday 30 December 2025

Hattia/Maghidt/Ghat

Across the desert (Wadi Maghidt and Kaf Ajnoun) to the ancient caravan city of Ghat, where we will meet the Tuaregs of Kel Ajjer.

Days 4-6: Wednesday 31 December 2025 to Friday 2 January 2026

Ghat/Akakus Desert/Germa

The Akakus Desert, among dunes, pinnacles and rock arches: the Afzgar arch, Wadi Tashwinat and Wadi Adadh, the dunes of Wan Kasa and the splendid rock paintings and engravings of Wadi Methkandoush.
