In the Omo Valley, a remote southern offshoot of Ethiopia, some 50 tribes have lived together in virtual isolation for a long time, maintaining centuries-old customs and traditions. Today, this region is no longer “Africa’s last unspoilt and wild frontier”, but its charm remains intact, especially if you leave the beaten track and enter its vast territory, where it is still possible to witness ancient rituals and suggestive initiation ceremonies.
The Dorze, farmers and cotton weavers, live in elephant-shaped bamboo huts. The Konso, tireless farmers, are renowned for their wooden sculptures of warriors who have died in battle, defeated enemies and captured animals. The Bodi are known for a unique beauty contest that rewards the fittest man in the village. The Mursi, with their carved bodies, scarifications and the lip plates of their women, embody the pride of a people strongly rooted in their traditions. Then there are the Hamer, famous for their ornaments of beads and shells and for the variety of their refined hairstyles.
