‘Kin la belle‘ is how Kinshasa used to be called. Today, with a population of around 18 million, it is rather a vast, typically African metropolis in perpetual flux, with obvious problems and contradictions, in which avant-garde urban splits mingle with colonial buildings and mingle with the disorder of peripheral working-class neighbourhoods, with two constants, the Congo River, omnipresent in the life of the Kinois, and the effervescent Congolese cultural scene.
