The north-western region of Cameroon is one of the most interesting from a cultural and ethnographic perspective and comprises a small mosaic of peoples, each with their own traditions.
Historically part of the former British colony, it was annexed to the French-speaking territory of Yaoundé after independence. Over the years, this new political landscape fuelled strong separatist sentiments, culminating in the self-proclamation of the State of Ambazonia.
The entire region is dotted with chefferies – centres of traditional power – which uphold ancient hierarchies that safeguard community order, both spiritually and administratively. Here we shall meet royalty and dignitaries dressed in sumptuous regalia, witness initiation dances and admire the processions of ancestral masks.
On this special tour, accompanied by the anthropologist Leonardo Francesco Paoluzzi, we shall also visit the Lamidate of Rey Bouba, a Fulani (Peulh) Islamic sultanate that has long been off-limits to Western travellers.

Meeting with the Lamido of Gashiga, where we will watch a horse parade.
Day 3: Monday 18 January 2027
Lagdo/Rey Bouba/Lagdo
Visit to the Lamidate of Rey Bouba, with its mud-brick architecture, and meeting with local dignitaries.
Day 4: Tuesday 19 January 2027
Lagdo/Ngaoundere/Train
Visit to the Lamidate of Ngaoundere, with its magnificent palace, before boarding a sleeper train.
Day 5: Wednesday 20 January 2027
Train/Yaoundé/Bangoulap
Transfer to the western kingdoms.
Day 6: Thursday 21 January 2027
Bangoulap/Batoufam/Bandjoun/Bafoussam
Visit to the kingdoms of Batoufam and Bandjoun, featuring incredible traditional architecture and mask dances.
Day 7: Friday 22 January 2027
Bafoussam/Foumban/Petpenoun
Visit to the chefferie of Bafoussam and the royal palace of the Bamoun people in Foumban, shaped like a spider and a snake.
Day 8: Saturday 23 January 2027
Petpenoun/Dschang
The tranquil landscapes of Lake Petpenoun, the crater of Mount Mbapit and the Museum of Civilisations in Dschang.
Day 9: Sunday 24 January 2027
Dschang/Ekom-Nkam/Pendja/Douala
The impressive waterfalls of Ekom-Nkam and the pepper plantations of Pendja.
Day 10: Monday 25 January 2027
Douala (DLA)/Return flight
Arrival at the destination airport.
