Egypt’s northernmost region, the Delta – a vast green triangle stretching between the branches of the River Nile, between Rosetta and Damietta – reveals the beauty of the ancient remains of the Pharaonic and Greco-Roman past, with the sites of Tanis and Bubastis and the cosmopolitan capital founded by Alexander the Great, Alexandria, and is striking for the austerity of its Coptic Christian monuments, with splendid monasteries scattered throughout the area, and the extraordinary engineering of the Suez Canal.

The Delta region, inhabited since the dawn of Pharaonic civilisation, rich and fertile thanks to its abundant water supplies and situated in a strategic position on the Mediterranean, witnessed the emergence of cities and sanctuaries and was the cradle of ancient local traditions and myths.
