The remote Principe island, located about 130 km north of S\u00e3o <\/span><\/strong>Tom\u00e9<\/b>, was the last of the two to be colonised by Portuguese outposts<\/b>. <\/span>Although its historical vicissitudes are similar to <\/b>those of S\u00e3o <\/span><\/strong>Tom\u00e9, geographically and morphologically it has some differences.<\/b><\/p>\r\n

Less rugged and inaccessible than S\u00e3o <\/span>Tom\u00e9, its beautiful sea bays <\/b>and unspoilt beaches <\/b>are just as wild and paradisiacal. There are also far fewer people, making it an absolute must-see.<\/p>\r\n

On the island, which is inhabited by around 8,000 people<\/b>, time seems to stand, and the ro\u00e7as <\/b>that dot the island’s rugged nature look like the tropical film set of a historical film about Portuguese colonisation.<\/p>\r\n

The ro\u00e7as Belo Monte<\/b>, Porto Real <\/b>and Sundy, <\/b>in their fascinating decadence, are the best preserved, transformed into a kind of village for the less wealthy families, descendants of the ancient slaves (called Forro).<\/p>\r\n

Apart from the capital Santo Antonio <\/b>and the airport, the island is almost uninhabited, except for a few small traditional fishing villages.<\/span> With primeval forests<\/b>, palm-fringed stretches of golden sand, volcanic peaks<\/b>, islets <\/b>and crystal-clear waters<\/b>, in Principe you feel lost in the sea, like Robinson Crusoe on a <\/span>desert island, in a place of timeless charm.<\/p>\r\n

To the north of the island are the breathtaking beaches and bays<\/b>, some of the most beautiful in the archipelago, such as the enchanting Bom Bom islet<\/b>, connected to the mainland by a wooden bridge, and the spectacular Praia Banana<\/b>, so wild and deserted that it was featured in a Bacardi commercial, named for its particular shape, reminiscent of the tropical fruit so dear to this land. Further south, the <\/span>immense Bahia das Agulhas<\/b> is a must, with its pristine waters where humpback whales <\/b>and schools of dolphins <\/b>are often seen.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
