Probably one of the most spectacular natural sites in Lesotho is the imposing Maletsunyane Falls, which, with a gigantic and unique 200-metre drop, thunderously cascade down from the heights of the Thaba Putsoa Mountains, near the quaint village of Semonkong, which in the local language means <\/b>‘<\/span>place of smoke’, because of the watery and <\/b>‘<\/span>smoky’ dust that is released by the bursting energy of the waterfall, enveloping the atmosphere for hundreds of metres<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We are in the heart of Lesotho<\/b>‘<\/span>s Central Highlands<\/b>, a rugged inland region that can be reached via a series of magnificent, rugged mountain passes, to the west the Paradise Pass <\/b>and the God Help Me Pass<\/b>, both above 2000 metres in altitude, and to the north the Mafika-Lisiu Pass, <\/b>which soars to 3000 metres.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is <\/span>the region where an infinite number of extraordinary geological and natural landscapes <\/b>are concentrated, with gorges, canyons, escarpments and valleys, as well as vast highland plains, which form the backdrop to numerous points of interest for tourists, including the Ketane Falls <\/b>with their 120 metres in height, not far from the village of Malealea,<\/span> or the monumental engineering work of the Katse Dam, <\/b>which has become one of the country’s main attractions, due to its magnificent man-made reservoir, set amidst breathtaking mountain scenery, and the nearby Katse Botanical Garden<\/b>, home to specimens of the famous endemic aloe polyphylla <\/i><\/b>and a wide variety of medicinal plants.<\/p>\r\n

A <\/span>multitude of ecotourism circuits, on foot or on horseback<\/b>, lead to the discovery of these beautiful highlands, enchanting landscapes that provide a scenic backdrop to the queen of Lesotho, the majestic Maletsunyane Waterfall, <\/b>which plummets from the rocky outcrop of a spectacular canyon, a rocky backdrop that can be descended uninterruptedly by double rope for the <\/b>entire 200 metres<\/strong> of its height, in a truly adrenalin-fuelled experience.<\/p>\r\n

Decidedly less demanding is the possibility of sport fishing<\/b>, or walks among the traditional villages <\/b>in the area, where the friendly inhabitants will not spare smiles and a warm welcome. The pretty traditional rondavels<\/i><\/b>, circular stone dwellings, adapted for tourist reception and equipped with fireplaces<\/b>, will be the added value of an unforgettable stay in the heart of the ‘<\/span>Kingdom of Heaven’, Lesotho.<\/p>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n
